In spring of this year (2010) I was praying for God to give me a country that he wanted to send me to, and to my surprise I heard Iceland. At first I wasn’t sure I was hearing him right so I continued in prayer for confirmations. Within the following weeks I received three major confirmations. “Ok, this is awesome that you want to send me to Iceland, God but please show me who with!” The following week I was at the young adult service I attend on Monday nights and Alyn and A.J. wanted us to pray for them because they were off to Iceland! I was so amazed at how quickly God answered my prayer. My own leaders had a heart for Iceland!
This started the journey. I had been told by a friend that I should check out YWAM (Youth with a Mission) a few months back and I my heart was so drawn to the organization when I read their history and mission statement.
“Youth With A MIssion all began in 1956 when a 20-year-old American college student named Loren Cunningham spent some time in prayer while on tour with a singing group in the Bahamas. Leaning back on his bed he saw what he called a “mental movie.” There was a map of the world and waves were breaking all over it. The waves began to turn into young people, thousands of them, spilling on to every continent and sharing the good news about Jesus. The picture faded.
“Was that really you, Lord?” he asked.
This idea, radical at the time, that young people could be missionaries, stayed with Loren. Four years later, in 1960, he started an organization with that idea expressed in its name: Youth With A Mission.
Today, Youth With A Mission (YWAM) has grown into one of the world’s largest Christian mission organizations. The story of how YWAM began and how it grew is a story of God’s direction and God’s grace in using ordinary people from countries all over the world.”
As I was looking on their website I came across Iceland. I then found that they were holding the first YWAM DTS in 25 years this coming October. I immediately printed out an application.
The process was slow and I was shaken with fear of finances. In July a dear friend of mine had a prophetic vision that I was sitting in a room that looked like an attic and God was pulling a treasure chest in front of me and urging me to open it; when I did a beam of different colored lights shown out and she said that it was full of the things that God had already made a way for, all I had to do was claim it. That night I decided to claim Iceland. I finished my application and kept in prayer that I would not be accepted unless I was called to go; lo and behold I was accepted.
The process of raising the money was trying, but God is my provider and he is faithful even though I haven’t raised the full amount I know it will come through. Ever since I landed on October 4th I have felt like I am walking in Gods perfect will for me in this season!
